You’re absolutely right—a cover letter might not matter at all! It really depends on the kind of employer/hiring manager you’re dealing with, as well as the position you’re applying for. If you’re lucky, the job ad will state how important a cover letter is.

In my experience, many companies want to see proof that an applicant is a good culture fit. And that’s where the cover letter really comes in handy.

All in all, a good cover letter is not going to hurt (and—best-case scenario—might really help) your case!
